Agricultural Development
The World Food Program has declared the Central African Republic a "Food Deficit" country—almost half the population is not getting enough calories per day. There are two strategies used to address this issue: relief and development. While ICDI does both, we focus primarily on development.
One of the greatest resources of the CAR is thousands of acres of fertile land. ICDI works with village cooperatives, teaching them how they can use agriculture to combat serious nutritional issues facing themselves and their children, as well as providing income through cash crops and the sale of seedlings. Through demonstration gardens, grafting, and plant culturing, ICDI has been able to introduce new techniques that help communities deal with the basic health issues they face each day.
